a thing i really miss is the early days of the "Chrome Experiments" site. people were just getting into the idea that js canvas existed, figuring out all kinds of wild shit to do with it, and you could just kinda go there and see Some Things The Computer Could Do, with no theme or pretense. screen hacks.

i'm pretty sure the site hasn't been updated in years, but even if it has, the problem is that GPUs and webGL got too good, and programmers love to create 3D visualizations that scare the ever loving shit out of me. i have severe phobias around distorted 3d graphics, so a lot of modern video hacks (e.g. almost everything on shadertoy) will put me into a catatonic state. chrome experiments mostly just turned into that before it stopped being updated entirely.

one of the things I remember from Chrome Experiments is an Arcade Fire music video that would zoom in on the town you grew up in, on Google Maps, because it could read your tracking cookies or something.
