hi there. i'm inbtwn. nice to meet ya!

i sometimes post about Things, mostly niche internet things like youtube videos, webcomics, etc. but i also reblog (rebug) a LOT of cool things so uhhh be warned

i started using linux as my daily OS back in... july '22? i think. almost a year. goddamn. anyways started on fedora before eventually moving towards endeavourOS... however, after toiling about it for a few days i've made the decision to wipe my linux SSD and put windows 10 on it.

it's a shame, too. because most things on linux perform better than on windows on my hardware, but like. 20% of the apps i use on windows just plain out don't work or are completely broken on linux, even if i use wine. (sony vegas is one of them, and i tend to use that semi-often to make complete garbage.) also, linux doesn't have very many good creative apps (the only exceptions are Krita and Resolve, and Resolve doesn't seem to work well on AMD cards for some reason?? on linux??), which i'mma be real is a huge dealbreaker for me. if Serif puts Affinity Designer on Linux i may consider coming back to it sooner but for now i'm just gonna deal with slightly-janky Windows. hopefully it'll be less jank once I build my new PC but who knows when that's gonna happen.

rip me using linux. you were cool and you've come so far but you're not quite there yet. i'm proud of you, though. keep at it. the year of the linux desktop is still within reach.

anyways, here's a list of pros and cons with my EndeavourOS experience:

pros:

  • runs 20% faster than windows (although that might just be the new SSD i bought for linux)
  • doesn't add useless crap to the desktop/taskbar every 3 months that you have to turn off
  • feels like you're the user while using it, not a consumer
  • you usually don't have to install drivers if your hardware is common enough
  • the OS actually allows you to change what file manager is the default
  • flatpak is cool
  • appimages are cool
  • the AUR is (mostly) cool
  • proton is cool
  • bash > command prompt
  • don't have to worry about viruses :)

cons:

  • many old-school Windows apps will either run jankily or won't run at all
  • have a game you want to play but it has anti-cheat that hasn't been set up for linux? good fucking luck lmao
  • the AUR is cool but sometimes apps can take an eternity to compile (and there isn't a related -bin package on the aur for some reason)
  • lutris is broken as shit. use bottles or heroic instead, lol
  • rarely, one of your apps just refuses to run one day, because Libraries
  • adding extensions to GNOME to make it usable reminds me too much of adding and tweaking shit to Windows to make it usable (although GNOME is still better because at least it has built-in extension support)
  • there's no easy way to transfer home folders to other distros, other than selectively copying files back and forth between installs

in reply to @inbtwn's post:

Yeah I've talked about this with a friend who does a lot more music and graphics than me. Essentially the only reason I'm able to main linux comfortably without a serious workflow disruption is because 99% of my work is either text or inkscape. Which is a shame! The fabled year of the Linux desktop remains forever elusive

yeahhhhh it's a real shame. linux is currently the 'close but no cigar' of OSes for me. inkscape is cool but honestly i like Boxy SVG's UI better. also i work more in raster than i do in vector, unfortunately
