A screenshot of the Unreal Tournament 2004 main menu

I got UT2004 working! This has been a thing I've been thinking for a while now that I need to get around to trying. Not only because I absolutely loved this game back then, but also because I can document and post about my magnum opus: The one single map I made (or at least released) for this game. More than 20 years later, I get to revisit it.

I get to revisit DM-1on1-Machinery

These screenshots were taken from one of the still existing UT2004 map archives, and I think they might have actually scraped the map's internal screenshot images, which is why they are of such a low resolution.

I had experience making maps for Unreal Tournament prior to making this and the map ended up having a fair bit of impact when it was released. It got downloaded by a lot of people and it received quite a bit of both positive and negative criticism during its lifetime. It became Featured Map on the UT review site whose forums I used to hang out in. Some people were really annoyed by its lack of graphics optimization and gameplay balance. It was a world of contrasts to be sure.

I was 15 when I embarked on creating this map.

I have not yet played it, but it is downloaded and installed into my map list. I have even tried out recording gameplay clips using OBS, because this map comes with a lot of moving parts that I hope to document as animated gifs. I will post a follow up post journalling me playing this for the first time in a very long time. I don't know how long it will take to write up the final post about this, but I am excited to do it. Join me on this little journey!

Side note: I have never used wine before, but I am very impressed with how quickly I got it to run. Unfortunately there is some kind of issue where after some time of playing, the textures start getting corrupted before the game segfaults with a GL_OUT_OF_MEMORY error. But it is playable for long enough to complete one match before needing to restart it, so it is good enough for me.

Also, fuck Epic for making this game unavailable.
