Ever see a little glimpse of culture that's totally unfamiliar to you?

In the Chinese gaming world, the two big RPG series are Legend of Sword and Fairy and Xuan-Yuan Sword. None of their games have been localized until the last few years.

Today I saw this video from a 2019 concert in Shanghai, where the orchestra breaks into a medley of themes from the orginal Sword and Fairy accompanied by gameplay. And the crowd goes wild. This is as excited a crowd as you'd see for a Final Fantasy concert, or the orchestra starting to play the Halo theme. There's a whole world out there of these incredibly influential games people in the west have never heard of! And I think that's cool.

This is absolutely beautiful! Even not being a long time fan of this saga, that music and that video remembered me how much I enjoyed my own adventure with Sword and Fairy.

You can't imagine how much stuff based on this game there is in China: plushies, figurines, food, tv dramas, jewelry, glasses, costumes... you name it. As you said, this is similar or even bigger than Final Fantasy to many Chinese gamers. Yet you search for any of those things from overseas, and will probably get zero results.

The third saga that the Chinese RPG fans recommend a lot, maybe even more than Xuan-Yuan Sword, is 古剑奇谭 or GuJian. GuJian 3 is translated and avaliable on Steam, in case you are interested in wuxia/xianxia games!
