we're all familiar with the prefix "sub-." comes from latin, means under. simple! we're also familiar with its antonym, "super-." same origin, means over. easy! we're also (probably) all familiar with them being used in tandem-- for example, subscript meaning script beneath the main text, superscript being the text above.

however.

there exists a whole field of words that could hypothetically be used, but aren't; and for what? simplicity's sake? absurd. there is an untapped bounty of new words to be used out there. here are some examples:

  • submarine > supermarine: a word for any sort of vessel that travels over water. we didn't - have a word for that before, right?
  • subway > superway: all elevated rail is now called the superway. you're welcome.
  • subtitle > supertitle: text that goes over everything on the screen, making it hard to see.
  • submissive > supermissive: you can figure this one out yourself. it's not hard.
  • subterranean > superterranean: a word for things that are above ground. so great to have a single word for this.

it goes the other way, too. here are some sub- equivalents of super- words:

  • superhero > subhero: a guy with below average capabilities that saves the day. tumblr blorbo style
  • superlative > sublative: a title you get for being worst at something in your high school. "least athletic." "least likely to succeed." "least likely to find true love." that shit.
  • supervise > subvise: a word for when you're watching people who are theoretically above you. like when your new manager is really dogshit at his job so you have to teach him the ropes even though he makes twice your salary. subvision.

i think these words would make excellent additions to the english lexicon, and i'm sure there are even more potential words out there that could really spice up our lives in these trying times. if you think of any, feel free to share.

compare sousveillance

the subway/superway thing implies the existence of a superway food chain as well. food chain where you have NO choices about ANYTHING you just sit down and they give you food. and also the food is good

...wtf Latin? I'm looking at sub- "under" and limes which is...doorway? Limit? House? Lintel? how the fuck did you guys get "exalted, highly placed" from "under threshold"? I love how the etymologies I'm looking at are like "oh yeah, that's definitely what it's from" and then refuse to elaborate lol

edit: I had a sudden realization, and now I'm convinced it's because some guy was just that good at limbo, no further explanation required rofl

supermarine at least gets an honorable "almost kinda happened" mention ( an british aircraft company making seaplanes and flying boats in the 1920s, although it became mostly know for land based aircraft later )

which is maybe one of the more literal takes on "well uhhhh it goes above the water"

Superurb - The tightly constrained core of a city. OR A giant city surrounded by other large cities.

Subb - awful

Subvillain - Someone so bad at crime you give them your wallet out of pity.

Superliminal - Simpsons did it.

Sub-heated - Mildly above room temperature.

SUBHOT - A video game in which time only moves when you don't.

Subman - The last survivor of a destroyed world, weakened by Earth's yellow sun.

Subgirl - Subman's younger female cousin.

Subdog - Subman's childhood pet dog.

Subboy - Either of Subman's sons.

Sub-Man - A Chinese boy with Subman's powers.

Subwoman - Either Subman's childhood friend or Subman's wife, both of whom gained Subman's powers.

Sub-Horse - Subgirl's pet horse, transformed into a centaur.

Subcat - Subgirl's pet cat.

Sub-Monkey - An alien monkey from Subman's homeworld, used to test his escape ship.

not to undermine the gag but supertitles exist! theatre performed in a different language than the primary one spoken by the audience (typically, opera) will project the translation over the proscenium arch so everyone can read it
