started reading a book by Andreas Arndt that seeks to enlighten the relationship between Marxian and Hegelian thought. a core claim is that (marxist) materialism doesn't hold up as a distinct philosophical position and can pretty much just be positioned within the Hegelian system
one of revolutionary girl utena's most impressive feats is how it manages to make Akio a compelling, fascinating, really interesting to analyze villain that i completely understand people being obsessed over how awful he is; and also completely and totally irredeemably awful. it's rare you hit the sweet spot of "worth analyzing and talking about, compelling enough to inspire essays" and also "not in any way a cool guy, everyone absolutely hates this guy" but they really do hit it well
so many villains i'm either like "well he had a point you know" or "i hate this bitch and do not want to talk about him" but utena manages the sweet spot where i do want to talk about him. i want to talk about how much he sucks and how utterly awful he is
not as much as i'd like to talk about wakaba, but that's like. just a recurring undercurrent of my mind. i always want to talk about wakaba. she's just like me fr i love her
