Every day you get a picture of my dog, Whimsy.
There will be posts about books.
Also, apparently, opera.
What a team-up?? I haven't Mieville'd yet but my impression was that he does a lot of capital w Weird fiction, so I'm intrigued
He's definitely the Weird Fiction guy (and also the die hard communist guy)
I'm so excited he hasn't written fiction in a while and there truly is nothing else like his writing out there
👀 Do you have strong feelings about which of his books I should read first, if you have the time?
Hmm it depends on what you're after, I'd say.
Perdido Street Station is his weird fantasy noir thing and it's not an easy book because it will keep throwing new, weird shit at you right to the end. But boy what a ride.
I'd say his short story collection "Three Moments of an Explosion" is a good entry point because the entire collection is him flexing his range. He tries out different genres, tones, structures. And each story is him grabbing a weird concept and playing with it, going all in without the need to sustain an entire novel.
Also if you don't vibe with a story, try the next one because it's going to be completely different. Like a beer flight to see what you want to order a pint of lmao
