I haven't had as much success finding James Baldwin when I'm scouring the used bookstores, unlike, say, Toni Morrison, but I have obtained "Giovanni's Room" which is ...
... sad feels like an understatement, a simplification of a beautifully written novel of the big tragedies and the mundane tragedies resulting from repression and denial. There are bursts of joy and happiness, but even those are stifled, in the moment or retroactively by the narrator.
The edition I have includes a very striking photo of Mr. Baldwin on the back cover which has nothing to do with the contents, but is a distracting choice by the publisher. A very handsome man.
