If you're new around here, welcome. This is a website where basically every post you read is something you'll be interested in because it's built to be that way. There's no algorithm and that can be a tough change if you're used to that as your primary means of discovery. That's ok! Change is hard but it's not impossible otherwise it wouldn't be called change it would be called, uh, I'm not sure. Change'nt. Or something.

Also please don't read this as an official guide I'm just providing my perspective)

Where do I find people to follow?

  • Tags! Much like Tumblr, people here use tags for the stuff they discuss and media they post. You can find some people you're interested in there.
  • Friends! You're likely coming from Twitter. Ask around! If you know some people who are on here, ask em' for some recs (I'll leave mine below after the jump). If they aren't on Cohost, bring em'! The more the merrier or whatever.
  • Search! Some usernames you are familiar with might be here already.
  • Lists! A lot of users are gonna see the new wave of people and recommend some follows.
  • Shares! The people you start following will share posts and there's basically no reason not to follow those people, too!
  • Reminder that following is free and unfollowing someone will not alert them and is also free. Don't like what is on your feed all of a sudden? Unfollow. There's no follower counts here. It's not the point. The point is for you to see stuff you're interested in.

I don't understand how posting works here. How do I make a good post?

It literally doesn't matter. Cohost has no metrics. There is no 'good' post. They're all just posts here. Post whatever you want. Post a blog. Post poetry. Post art. Post nudes. Post pictures of your cat to the #cats of cohost tag.

In case you were thrown here without a buoy in an effort to escape Twitter, let me be clear: this is not Twitter. This site is not designed to firehose you with shit. It's meant to encourage you to find people and topics you connect with. It's designed to very purposely not prey on the bad parts of your brain to keep you addicted, angry, and in need of validation. You will have to break some habits to understand how the site works but I promise you, you'll love it when you do. When you're settled in, Cohost is genuinely a site where every post is interesting because you've ensured it is. I love it for that. I hope you do too.

in reply to @erica's post:

A lot of this does sound like mastodon. No algorithms, tag based search, no trending content or stuff to find that you don't outwardly seek.

Admittedly going to take a lot of adjustment on my part. I bounced off of Mastodon for these reasons because it just became too difficult to find content that interested me.

fwiw i feel like tagging culture on cohost is much more robust than on mastodon, which I'm guessing has something to do with tags being in a seperate text field VS being part of the post+counting towards a character limit. i rarely tagged anything on mastodon unless i really specifically wanted people to find it, but i tag almost every post i make on cohost with something. OP doesn't mention it i don't think but we also have #The Cohost Global Feed and various iterations of #The Cohost Global Feed (topic) which a lot of people add to their posts to make them discoverable to a general audience (or a wider audience of a specific topic). I personally have #The Cohost Global Feed bookmarked, along with a couple others, so i can switch between my follows/main feed and the "global feed" really easily by switching to the bookmarked tags feed
hope that helps! welcome!

Aw, you're too sweet as always, Erica, legit. I wish I was posting more cogent stuff more often, but it's been a genuine pleasure getting to let my hair down a little online with you and pretty much all my other favorite people on the Internet. It definitely feels a lot easier to be my most authentic self here than it has anywhere else on the Internet in a long ass time. Forever grateful you and Lena turned me on to this place, it's exactly what I've needed after the 2021 and 2022 I had, online and off. 😌

I rly bounced off of tumblr when I tried to move earlier this year because as basically a twitter-only social media user for 6 years the whole concept and discovery of tagging posts never really made sense to me
really sucks having to build your following up back from 0, and with an absolute fraction of the wonderful people I followed over on twitter after years and years of curation even on this platform :(

change is hard! there is no graceful transition out of this. the world's stupidest, shittiest, dumbest, fucking clown bastard piece of shit loser of a billionaire ruined it for everyone. we all scatter to the wind, there is no graceful transition

thanks for the orientation. as a lurker on various hobby twitter spheres I really love the intent behind this place. hoping I can have some more interesting convos about stuff I like here as well as unlearning some unhealthy habits in the process
