Sometimes a game just really hits for you. I caught a random tweet recommending this for fans of PS1/Saturn platformers, and it was only $5, so I figured I'd give it a shot and just got laid out on my ass by how charming and fun the game is. You play as this racoon going through 8(??) levels of two acts each, and you have a double jump and a twirl attack to defeat enemies that also can help extend your jump, and you collect a bunch of origami cranes on your way to the level exits. That's it, it's really simple. But the whole game just has wonderful care put into its lo-fi aesthetics, with huge beautiful spaces and some unique mechanics per visual theme. It's relatively short, clocking in under 3 hours for me to get all the collectibles, but it's one where I'm keeping it installed and might run for better times, just because I like its world so much. Genuinely top five game of 2022 for me (not that I play a TON of a new releases lol)

A few technical notes:

  • Literally as I was playing it a patch dropped that made some of the more frustrating level design easier, which was nice, so who knows if more tweaks aren't coming.
  • There's a 20 fps mode to make it really look like a 90s one of these but I'm not that much of a sicko.
  • There's a hi-fidelity mode that turns off the Saturn Filter or whatever on the graphics, but I think if you use it you're history's villain.
  • There is an option to give yourself a bigger and more visible jump shadow in the options, and you should absolutely turn that on. The default shadow is wholly inadequate for the game's demands, even if I'd still say the game isn't especially difficult.
  • It's $5, c'mon, you should play it.
