the actual second birthday is tomorrow (2/3) and eggbug’s birthday is sunday (2/4) but we’re celebrating today! because it’s a work day! you can read the longer thing we wrote for our 1st birthday last year.
we launched in private alpha on February 3, 2022, and ramped up to around 150 users before our public launch on June 28, 2022. one more year down!
only one new thing this week (we have multiple big projects in motion right now):
- added Tag Recommendations to the post composer
- you probably noticed this one, it’s pretty visible
- right now, we show your pinned tags (which you can edit from your page settings!) and your most recently used tags
- if you have suggestions for other tag types to show, let us know!
- note, though, that we’ve already considered “site-wide trending/popular tags recently” and aren’t doing it on purpose. history on twitter and elsewhere shows that it’s a laborious, error-prone process to tune this for picking up on trends properly in the first place, not having them disappear while the event is still broadly topical, and not being a massive spam/harassment vector.
ok, let’s talk big projects:
obviously, tipping is going on in the background. we’d decided internally to make some staffing changes there (jae and colin are going to switch places, so jae will return to cohost development and colin will switch over to tipping and subscriptions). we’d started this transition process on monday, but it’s currently delayed by a more urgent Major Project (i think that’s a good way of referring to it) suddenly popping up on tuesday, namely:
jae is currently in the middle of a very sudden, short-timeframe move from their home in Florida (three guesses as to why) and is, as a result, somewhat distracted from work. they expect to be fully back in the office on the 26th, but are working intermittently until then. we’re planning to have the dev swap done by the week of the 19th. unfortunately, things happen and we have to roll with them. they’re not thrilled about the whole “being forced out of their hometown by genocidal fascists” thing but you do what you gotta to survive.
in the meantime, colin’s working on being able to add attachments to the middle of posts without the hacks that have been traditionally required. there’s some infrastructure work around post storage and display needed — to undo simplifying assumptions we made in the past — but it’s what’s happening!
oh also we have a date for the eggbug plush, it’s very soon. unfortunately we couldn’t quite make it happen in time for his birthday but you won’t have to wait too long.
that’s all for this week! thanks, as always, for using cohost! another year older, likely not another year wiser.
