I recently ran out of Spotify student premium (according to them one is only allowed to be a student for four years) so I'm looking at other streaming services1 with the same sort of student plan. I know I could cheat and make a second Spotify account but I figure I might as well explore a bit. I do currently use SoundCloud without a paid account, but I hear Deezer is another popular option. Has anyone used Deezer before? How is it?

  1. preëmptively: pls don't recommend bandcamp, I use that too separately2

  2. or funkwhale. I did that for a bit a few years ago and I decided that I really missed algorithmic recommendations and not having to maintain a music library server myself

lmao turns out the free version of Deezer only lets you play 30s clips of songs. so that's how I'm doing my testing of Deezer lol, just 30s at a time

also Lemon Demon isn't on there at all?? I wanted to port my playlists and of them contained Touch Tone Telephone so that track didn't get ported

actually I have to eliminate apple music from my list of contenders because I've only just discovered that it doesn't have user-created playlist sharing?? I somehow only discovered this after trying to find an OST playlist for Les amours imaginaires lol. speaking of,

  • spotify: has Isabella Pierre's Le temps est bon
  • deezer: has Isabella Pierre's Le temps est bon
  • soundcloud: has illicit uploads of Isabella Pierre's Le temps est bon, which is good enough for me

you know I completely forgot Pandora existed. given how many people have interacted with this thread so far without mentioning it, it seems a bunch of you have forgotten it too
I will investigate, although it does seem you need an account first to play anything. one of the most underrated basic feature of bandcamp and soundcloud imo, being able to share a track without the other person needing an account

UPDATE:

  • does have Touch Tone Telephone
  • does not have an official Eurovision 2024 playlist
  • does have Isabella Pierre's Le temps est bon
  • does have user-created searchable playlists
  • for the life of me I cannot figure out how to follow someone on the app?? there just is no follow button but I do see on my profile a followers and following thing

thinking about going for SoundCloud specifically for the thing where you can comment on a song at a specific timestamp. I don't currently do that but I'm entertaining the possibility of doing so and I like to see other people's comments

I've been using Youtube with an adblocker since forever. NewPipe and PipePipe on me phone. The Algorithm™ now starts to recommend music/videos related to the one you're listening again on the canonical frontend, after so many years not doing it.

Also, Deezer used to be cool and work well with their free tier, like, 13 years ago. idk how they're doing now.
In fact your comment had me look up whether they still exist or not.
