oh so when cohost posts that they're losing 50k a month1 and ask people to subscribe to Plus! if you can they get made fun of relentlessly by people on mastodon and branded as grifters, but when tumblr is losing 30m a year and users are for some reason voluntarily encouraging exactly the same financial support model but for the same big corp that owns wordpress it's radio silence, I see how it is 🙄
the numbers are in the green now, but we'll see whether that's sustainable
it's kind of astonishing how long-lived some social networks have been compared to how quickly new ones rise and fall these days. if you go to this tumblr post while logged in you'll see when you joined tumblr and apparently I've been on there for at least 12 years (that account is probably not my first either)

just when I think maybe tumblr actually cares about the direction of the platform in terms of enjoyability for its users rather than the next big monetization scheme they start up with some more unasked for nonsense like tumblr live and I'm like huh. I guess cohost is better
