the thing that i keep coming back to us how much that movie has disease of american pop music. it has a lot of diseases but in a movie where you could literally just use mario music that’s sort of what stands out to me as just like. “okay well who cares we’re making it our way” and by “our way” they mean minions and it fuckin sucks.
they start trying for just a second and then throw it out for a montage. it’s just annoying. there is a version of this movie where they try for the entire runtime and it’s far more enjoyable but instead it’s just. this.
it’s not the voice acting (which is better than i expected), it’s not the animation (illumination is still on the pre-spiderverse cgi train but there’s some pretty scenes in here), it’s the writing. it is just so… bland. sure there’s a couple jokes but at what cost?
it has disease of “montage set to i need a hero,” disease of pointing wojack meme, disease of all women are girlboss… it’s just. ugh.
man. illumination movies just aren’t for me. this thing barely gets a 2 from me and it’s only because there were a couple moments where the movie made me smile. unfortunately, every single time it did that, it gave me 6 more moments where i was reminded why i don’t like illumination’s particular breed of animated feature film.
at least the sonic movies are good.
