Yeah it needed the paste. Not terrible flavor thanks to the red wine BUT it needed the paste

Coincidentally, I'm making chili tonight, and decided to try adding some tomato paste at the same time I add the spices, to toast them together. I haven't tried tomato paste in chili before.
It adds a more tomatoey flavor if that's what your aiming for. Usually just a good mix of spices will do you well but the paste should be fine
