Look I know it's been a while since it came out. While I bought it at release I haven't played it until recently because I was lacking a working controller - and yes, you should play with a controller if possible.
But you have to play this game. It's amazing in its own right, but also this is my new favorite way to watch movies. I really believe that Sam Barlow has invented the correct paradigm for the future of "interactive movies", way better than anything Netflix could ever. All of his games are also a perfect fit for "couch co-op" with anyone at all, even people who aren't gamers.
Heed the content warnings in the menu, but please play IMMORTALITY.
After seeing some discussion: there's a reason there's that "how do I know if I'm satisfied" meme about Barlow's previous work. This isn't a game where it will be clear that you've "finished" it. This is another reason I think it's like an interactive movie (in a good way): whenv you finish with a movie is up to you. You just want to watch it through once with half an eye while doomscrolling at the same time? Valid. You watch it multiple times, check out the commentary tracks, read critical essays from multiple perspectives, and write a master's thesis on the nautical symbolism present? Also valid.
I think Barlow has really almost invented a new genre and way of understanding challenge in games with Her Story and I hope others pick up the torch too.
the biggest compliment i can give this game is that, in addition to the game part of the game being great, the clips of the three fictional movies are entertaining enough that i wish they existed as real, full movies. the film aesthetic of each era is perfectly captured.
i would do a great deal of morally dubious things for a real copy of Ambrosio
the game is good, folks
i forgot to update this but there actually IS an ambrosio movie in real that i did indeed find. haven't watched it yet tho
