I never understood when people said bagpipes were shitty or annoying. They MAKE you listen and when you do you can FEEL it in your BONES. They kick ass

Honestly I think they're the only instrument that only works when heard in the real world. A recording just doesn't do them justice

there was a relatively common trope in media in the 80s and early 90s where people would be making movies or TV or whatever and have bagpipes but one of the pipes would be deliberately out of tune and sound like shit and so people (read: americans) just sort of decided that that's what bagpipes sound like in lieu of any meaningful exposure to the instrument

growing up in Scotland I associated bagpipes mainly with a) that guy outside Waverley Station playing three songs over and over for the tourists and b) the gift shops playing that one other bagpipe song over and over, so the one point I actually heard a bagpipe somewhere else and took the time to actually listen to it I was shocked. this is actually an instrument you can use for reasons other than notifying tourists they are in fact in scotland now
