Starship pilot who carries a sword. Like, an actual, two foot long, honed steel sword.

What, were you going to bring a gun to a boarding action?

Do you want to puncture the hull? Because that's how you get explosive decompression.

the pulsed plasma toroid (PPT) hand-cannons were invented as a means of delivering high energy pulses with explosive power that won't pierce a typical aluminum hab hull. it's basically a mini ball-lightning cannon that causes blasts on contact in the 1kJ range. as it required a rather complex arrangement of plasma toroid creation, compression, acceleration, and a directed microwave beam to keep the plasma from collapsing prematurely, a PPT cannon is a bit of a nightmare to maintain, but was seen as necessary when fighting in an enclosed area where laser fire could threaten to blow the hull open.

Millen had one of these, a Tau Ceti Armory original PPT-3. one with a butane battery. not even a SMES! the thing belongs in a museum! he took it to every boarding party, "just in case." not only has it never been fired, the gas can isn't even popped.

where others would use their plasma guns, Millen used a big knife. some would call it a sword as it's quite a big knife at 63 cm or so of blade, but it's meant for cleaving plants aside in thick forests; cutting through meat is just kind of a side benefit. It turns out you don't really need to fire at range in the tight insides of a spaceship, and if you cut the lights, most of your opponents can't see. Millen, eyes shining in the dark, absolutely still could.
