Edit: (Im removing this screenshot of a post I found frustrating because it doesn’t feel good to be putting someone on blast. I think all this is hitting a misinformation trigger for me and I’m willing to yell into the void to get through it but i should leave other people out of it. Sorry)

Ok I have to tell you how I saw a “doesn’t have an algorithm” post, highly shared, by a popular furry poster, which had a reply from someone who was like “why am i seeing your post then, I don’t follow you” and got a response of “well, bluesky shows you posts that people you follow have replied to” and, friends, i was looking in the fucking office camera in that moment

This is why this is making me feel insane

…bluesky’s (current) entire identity is that it’s all algorithmic!!! Algorithmic feeds, automated NSFW/hate group mention/violence/spam tagging, automated moderation, etc.

Until they finally follow through on their promises to make it all decentralized, those are the only vaguely unique traits among Twitter replacements they’ve tried to push!

no, no, it doesn't have an algorithm. it just has a set of rules it follows in order to decide which content to show you, sometimes including content from people you don't even follow. totally different

In the sense that bluesky is chronological, so was Twitter until I left it a few months ago. Idk how bad things have gotten but i would never have described Twitter, even in the worst times, as “non chronological”. That’s one of its defining traits!

Oh wait, are we talking about the optional for you/discover/etc feeds? Which -both of these sites have-, separate from the ‘following’ feed? I still don’t understand then.

The biggest difference I can understand here is that Twitter does more, particularly post Elon takeover, to encourage you to use the for you feed, but the whole “chrono following feed” and “non chrono selective algo feed” thing exists on both sites.
