yeah one of the things i liked that article for was that they point out this isn't some kind of inevitable result of the times, the people doing that have names and registered businesses

There's a 1920ish novel (with the amazingly useless title Number 87) which is basically an almost-Batman for the wrong World War, except that he uses his radiation-based weapons to kill (fictional) right-wing creeps...
