Managed to go until basically the end of the day without "generally browsing/idling on the internet". Pretty successful. Trying to actively be bored more often and/or take an internet-induced-dopamine tolerance break. Gotta make my brain work hard for that good dopamine.

Got work things done productively during the day. Still watched a fair amount of youtube/twitch, tho mostly at meals, and that's at least "one screen at a time" instead of being on my tv while also on my laptop/phone.

Someone pinged me on chat at 11:00pm. I've been online for the last 90 minutes. In that time:

  • I read some bits of reddit, this was pretty meh (like 40m)
  • I helped someone (or tried to) in my matrix room with some rust stuff, that was nice (like 15-20m)
  • I read some of twitter, and it made me angry nearly immediately (like 30m)
  • Wrote this post (like 5m), because that's how my brain works

Probably like... 75 minutes too much internet today. Gotta keep improving tomorrow.

Fighting the good fight. I've had to just wholesale remove myself from a lot of these things, because they consume EVERYTHING. Reddit was a problem for me; deleted that account. I managed to configure Twitter to be not-so-bad, but ejected once the doge-in-chief showed up.

Youtube is a problem, but I'm not sure what to do about it. The trouble is that a there's a bunch of legitimately good videos, which I'm better off for having watched (I can watch sigplan presentations over lunch!), but I can't mechanically remove the tripe, at least not easily. I wholesale block basically anything with breathless titles / thumbnails (THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING!), and that helps a bit.
