I noticed the times I went to conventions or looked through an online gallery I would have to dig a few pages back to see any birds, or really anything that isn't some type of canine. Some artists I asked and they said they could do birds but didn't have any in their binder...

Dogs, wolves, and foxes may be the most popular fursona choices at any one time, but showing off your art of birds, dinosaurs, extinct species, just about anything, seems like an easy way to stand above the rest and get commissions from the lesser represented fursonas that just went through binders at five other tables and did not see a character like themselves a single time.

Impress us. Tempt us. Make us remember you.

(This is also kinda introspection to why I don't have a lot of art commissions of myself aakgjhsdjkgsfh)

Personally, if I'm going through your portfolio and it's just dude after dude I'm going to assume that you're not down with drawing girls and I probably won't even ask about a commission. If you CAN draw girls then please put up an example so I can seeeeeeee ;.;

Tbf, a lot of the reason is just that most commissioners have the common 'sona species, so that's just gonna populate most of our portfolio ^^' that doesn't mean artists can't include personal work of other critters in their portfolio tho! I love drawing birds so much in my spare time T.T

That's fair, it makes sense the most common species are gonna be most of the portfolio! My suggestion was more to feature the less common fursonas if you ever did any, because if customers don't see examples that you can do their species then they may never think to ask.

I'm glad you like drawing birds tho, birds are so important and good uvu

i definitely understand the struggle! one of my fursonas/main characters is a bird and it's very hard to find artists for it, and one of my selfships involve a big plant monster that i'm unsure of who to go to for

It seemed to me like a lot of artists would be willing to try uncommon species, but if they've ever done one it's not in their gallery so you'd never know to ask about it!

for sure! another issue I have is not knowing if they can pull off the species correctly if there's no examples, and while I understand learning new artistic things can be hard I have limited money to spend

Yeah!!! Opening a gallery and it's mostly canines and then suddenly BIRD aaaa and the bird is really well done too
