If you were looking for a VR headset mostly for VRChat but also possibly general VR games, what would you get these days? I'm looking at the Valve Index but I kinda feel like it's a bit long in the tooth since it's been out since 2019, and I don't really know what to look for when buying a headset.

Should also mention that I don't want anything to do with Meta, so the Oculus headsets are ruled out.

I recommend either starting with or entirely avoiding Windows Mixed Reality headsets (like the Odyssey+ and HP Reverb G2), they're good if you're broke or have no other option but the tracking is limited and the platform has been all but abandoned by Microsoft.

I picked up the Index this year, it's a good headset, though the controllers have minor faults (mostly due to the thumbsticks). Valve's next headset is likely to include updated controllers that are compatible with the original Index, though nothing about it's been confirmed yet.
