i know i have the tendency to really hype up the stuff i like, but there is genuinely no other rapper who has ever done it like him. the kenny dennis stuff is obviously stellar: it's really impressive how seamlessly he's able to move between the comedic and the tragic with that character, and the KD series of albums is hilarious enough that it's all the more insane that he could use that same narrative to cultivate such a deep sense of grief on dennis 6e. crazy stuff! beyond that, there's ajai - similarly tragicomic - and derek, my personal favorite geti character, and one i really wish he would do more with.
and i do wish he got a little more recognition! people like dennehy ofc, but outside of that there's this treasure trove of really clever and engaging rap music in his discography that people just don't really give a shit about because it's also really fucking weird. oh well. guess that's just how it is to like oddball shit
he said on twitter it was gonna be the best thing hes ever dropped and i was like lol ok. but then he dropped it and its his best since purple moonlight pages at the very least
5 stars is maybe a little forward for this one off the first listen, but i listened to it while i was making a really good pot of fried rice and thinking about all the other music from this year that i really enjoyed, so i have my reasons. and for real, 2023 was a great year for the kind of quirky indie rap that can coax this kind of rating from me, so i'm glad i caught r.a.p. ferreira's late-december recommendation of this album on twitter. kenny segal remains one of the best indie rap producers alive, and on this album i'm yet again in awe of how perfectly he can craft a beat for any rapper he works with. pink navel sounds entirely in their element doing these abstract nerd raps, too, and they're really good at it. their more melodic flows are some of my favorites from this album, and they remind me of my other favorite indie rap project from this year, video dave and controller7's ArticulatedTexTiles. i'm super excited to revisiting this album and seeing how my feelings about it develop, but right now i gotta eat this fried rice.
