Consonants

You can think of the 9 consonants as being on a grid shaped like a #. Each letter is substituted with the square part of the grid that it's in, so the corners have an L shape and the middle sides have a square U shape. The consonants are in the following order, going from left to right.

Top row (nasals and also j)

  • m
  • n
  • j

Middle row (stops)

  • p
  • t
  • k

Bottom row (non-nasal continuants)

  • w
  • s
  • l

The first column is all labial consonants, and the second column is all alveolar consonants.

Vowels

Four of the vowels are arranged in a diamond around an X shape.

Top row: i Middle row (mid vowels): e, o Bottom row: u

The last vowel, a, is represented by a circle or diamond
