the best part of living in nowhere - Nevada, Idaho, doesn't matter - is that the stars still shine brightly. at night, in the dark, blanketed by nothing but stars, you can look up and truly understand why myths were created about the heavens. they have an unshakable sense of permanence that makes me feel simultaneously like no-one and nothing and also like the most important person in the world.

it's one of the few sights that shakes loose the unstoppable, immense weight of History and allows me to fully fathom it. Everyone who came before me, everyone who comes after me - they will stare at the same heavens, they will tell stories about the stars, and they will carry on creating the world we live in. it's enough to give me hope.

god, yeah. i had a similar feeling whenever i watched meteor showers or thought about comets, these cyclic entities that we revisit for thousands of years. living in a place where you can really see the stars is so nice :host-love: this shot's fucking incredible!!! the composition is truly stellar (not sorry)

I've always lived in areas with lots of light pollution, but last year my spouse and I went to stay at a nearby dark sky park. The longer you looked up, the more it felt like the sky was fabric with thousands of pinpricks, hanging close enough that you could almost reach out and touch it. Or, alternatively, it felt as if the sky an actual place that you could step into.

i have always lived where the clear night sky is mostly black, save for the moon, the planets, and a smattering of stars. to me, this vacant sky is... well, homely, i guess. but i have been to the middle of nowhere a few times while visiting family, and the night sky where the light pollution doesn't touch is marvelous and i savor the few chances i've gotten to see it
