one of my favorite etymologies is the Ojibwe word for cat, gaazhagens, literally "little glutton" (gaazhage- verb stem for "be gluttonous" + -(e)ns diminutive suffix)
it is very accurate for our little adolescent cat Tevildo (the black cat in the picture, next to his tortie big sister Rick Astley), who followed us home flea-ridden a couple months ago when we were walking our dog Reut (the dog in the picture where Tevildo's trying to steal her food lol)
Tevildo will eat a whole can of wet food in less than a minute and then start yelling ("more!") demanding to be released so he can go steal the other pets' food. On several occasions he has gotten a weird sticky food spot on his head from lunging at the food with such gusto. He also apparently really likes bread, and we've had to throw out a large amount of bread that was improperly secured against being cat burgled.
Rick Astley is similarly crazed for a food she can't eat, but it's plants instead of bread, so we have no houseplants anymore and she periodically tries to eat the fake houseplant we got because of her, and if we're unpacking groceries we have to be careful or she'll just come and start eating vegetables out of the bags. Also she tries to slip outside when the door is open so she can find whatever plants are growing in the edges of the alley to eat. Like Tevildo, we got her when she showed up and demanded entry - she meowed at our back door at a previous apartment and made herself at home very quickly on being allowed in. She was really thin at the time, probably because while she was stray she just kept trying to eat plants she can't digest and throwing them up.
This is a household of very friendly and affectionate but also so audaciously stupid cats.
