i do not care what your legal name is unless we hire you and even then i will probably never see it since it goes straight in the payroll software

Having applied for a job prior to a legal name change, I can absolutely endorse this. There's only two people who need to understand your legal name - the one doing the background check, and the one handling payroll details - and those only show up once you've actually received an offer. Interview with the name you intend to keep using.
