but it's been a thing for almost a decade
https://www.nhtsa.gov/takata-recall-spotlight/state-takata-air-bag-recalls-fourth-report

from a different article in 2021:

Seventeen million inflators have yet to be repaired or otherwise accounted for. As underscored by the fact that there were two fatal incidents in 2020, it is paramount that the affected vehicle manufacturers continue to maximize the tools they have developed over the last five years, and identify potential new tools and opportunities for increasing repair rates. It is only through continued focused effort that we can accelerate recall completion and work toward repairing all defective Takata air bag inflators.

your dealer/mechanic may have done this already. if you bought used, check

I don't mean to scare people, but like, sometime this month, just set aside a Saturday to check the website if your airbags will kill you in a crash instead of save you. It's not all of them, or even all from this company, but like, reduce the risk. it's one VIN search

especially with how humid it's been this year, and previous ones.

theres a way to check at the bottom of the article

in reply to @NireBryce's post:

When my parent's had theirs replaced they told us they hadn't redesigned the airbags yet. So they just put less rusty ones in instead. Somewhat fortunately that car got totaled by catalytic converter theft, because they probably rusted out again.

Hopefully the airbags have been redesigned by now.
