Thoughts on the taste of woodwind reeds

Mostly neutral. They taste like a thin piece of wood. New reeds taste stronger and I like them less then, but (in much the same way that five minutes after looking at a gigantic movie screen it somehow shrinks down to a personal television) the reed and any taste sort of disappears after a while into the experience of playing the thing.

When I was a kid I thought about reeds a lot because I was constantly breaking them or putting them on wrong or running out of them and now I don't really think about them much. I know what kind I like to play (2.5 strength Vandoren, Rue Lepic if I'm feeling fancy or if I've got a lot of playing to do) and I keep buying them. I think this means I'm right in the middle of the dunning kruger line and in a decade or so I'll hopefully have extremely fine grained opinions about reeds
