One of the only songs I know of that comes close to the type of string arrangement on River Man is Amie from Damien Rice' debut album, which was arranged by David Arnold (involved because Rice is his cousin) with River Man as a reference point. I remember reading how the arranger on the original song was mostly working on horror movies at the time.
