Tomorrow, the approximately 300 workers of Powell's Books in Portland will be going on a one-day, unfair labor practice strike—the first time they've taken such action since 2003. Workers at these stores have been bargaining for a new contract since February and have been working on an expired contract since June.

For the duration of tomorrow, ILWU Local 5 is thus asking people to not shop or visit the website. You can instead donate to their strike fund here. You can also sign their petition here.

This strike was authorized in August, with 92% voting in favor—and this occurred after workers rejected Powell's "last, best, and final offer" of bargaining as insufficient. According to Northwest Labor Press, Powell's proposal for wages were $16.50/hr. A statement by Powell's further asserted that their proposal would "reduce monthly premiums for health insurance, eliminate deductibles for most doctors visits, improve the retirement plan match, and increase wages for every worker". But this is quite a gap, at least on wages, from what ILWU Local 5 has fought for: a starting wage of at least $21/hr to correspond with a living wage in Multnomah County.

Another round of bargaining is ostensibly to take place between September 5th and 6th, but Powell's has stated that it sees no reason to meet; thus, it is unclear what will come of those dates as of now.
