I sent an email to a certain Canadian Magazine offering my services as a freelance illustrator last week. Today they replied that they like my work but that they "prioritize Canadian illustrators" and that they would contact me if they needed an "international artist".
I have been a Canadian Citizen for a while now, been living here for 7 years. They didn't ask me if I was one, mind you, they just assumed I wasn't... which I guess I can see but, like, ask me? Or send a list of requirements or something.
A lot of people born elsewhere settle in Canada and become citizens.
Guess my name doesn't sound very Canadian, whatever that means.
