You generally need some JavaScript, unless something new snuck through. But you can generally create a div that fills the screen (so that the user doesn't click the background) and has something like position: absolute;. The JavaScript would add and remove another CSS class that hides the element. I have a silly unfinished project (I never got around to figuring out the AI) that has a few "modal" popups, including one on startup that just gives the code time to set up, that might help put that into better context.

And thank you! I'll probably get to it eventually (though it's technically playable now, as long as you don't mind playing both sides). I just need to carve out a day or two to figure out how to do the "branch and bound" code (whatever specific algorithm makes the most sense) efficiently for this kind of problem...
