someone was asking me about obscure IP adaptations of puzzle games and this one has to be right up there:
This is Disney Lost Light, a sedate mobile puzzle game from ~10 years ago that came and went in a matter of months and is essentially unplayable nowadays:
...and this is the source of their game system: BLOCKSUM, a cracked-out doujin action puzzle game from the mid-'00s:
BLOCKSUM was relatively famous by doujin standards, having won a student award at CESA and all, but it's still wild to me that it ever got the attention of anyone at Disney, of all places. The last time I went digging, I turned up someone claiming to be the producer on the Disney version (maybe they replied/QRT'd on twxttxr? I forget) who gave the impression that they didn't even know it was obscure, which makes me wonder if it'd been an office hit or something because that game was by not what I'd call even modestly well-known, especially outside of Japan.
The other twist is that the main dude behind BLOCKSUM may or may not have gone to be the main dude behind Splatoon.
