I've been fighting one of the worst Art Lows I think I have dealt with in a long, line time.

Recently, I've been meticulously studying soft shading styles from a few of my favorite late 90s/early 00s visual novels (but mostly Comic Party) and trying to replicate them to a level I'm happy with, but it feels like an impossible challenge. Just today I spent about six hours non-stop giving it my best Adderall shot, undistracted, laser-focused in, mind clear, and yet every attempt came out horribly.

I've been crying entirely too much over this since yesterday and feel utterly frustrated and demoralized, yet I refuse to give up. I want to express this special feeling I get from that style of art, I don't want to compromise, but this is a difficult and challenging path I have picked for myself. I feel so tired... and beaten down...

Very ambitious style to try and mimic, yeah... even if I'm just aiming for a simpler version of it...

many things here work well until you get to the face (mouth/nose too far left) the leg closest to the viewer (especially the upper thigh) just looks off, like we’re lacking perspective lines that show us where the front of the thigh is vs side

otherwise, the arm cuff on the arm closest to the viewer (with the full hand) feels at a slightly too low angle implying a strange wrist movement

The lighting is maybe a touch confusing, but I really do think you’re being unnecessarily harsh on yourself beyond that. It may not be your best work, but this feels foundational to your journey and it’s clear from your composition you understand where you need to be, you’re working towards it and it’s just a matter of practice. I love the hair, the ribbons, the eyes and the shoulder poofs.
