i miss the "is this the citizen kane of games?" era of bad games crit. i like how it referred to a film from 1941 but was used to mean "the first good/real/important one." i like how it was being used to mean that as late as like, 2010. saying citizen kane, meaning cabiria or oliver twist or birth of a nation, doing so years after the question could coherently be asked

The Gone with the Wind of games: OK, we're looking for something sentimental, nostalgic, backed by celebrity, and whose implicit purpose is to mollify some grim aspect of history. I was having trouble with this one at first, but if we're willing to stretch our definitions, then I can see Cyberpunk 2077 filling this niche.

The Wizard of Oz of games: A movie that was notable largely for the recent technological developments it could take advantage of, taking place in a fantastic realm that stands in contrast to our fallen modern world in some way. The game that came to mind right away was Myst.

The Metropolis of games: A film that was celebrated for its technical achievements, defined how entire generations of film producers went about making films, but starts to show some cracks once you pay attention to its tepid political conclusions. This one's easy: BioShock.

See for all of these and especially metropolis I was trying to think of games that are like, pre-2005. So Myst is a great answer. Cyberpunk is a stretch regardless of timeline as you said. BioShock, honestly kind of a perfect answer? Trying to think of earlier stuff System Shock fit in a lot of ways but the politics are REALLY important to Metropolis' legacy and not a lot of influential games that old are terribly political in that way
