List of games I think are cool

So as a librarian I am often helping people find books that they'd like. This is called Reader's Advisory and is a great way to promote literacy! But I have a CRAVING in my brain for a very specific kind of Video Game and I'm not a Gamer so I need your help.

Please keep in mind:

  • I do not own a PC! At this point in my life the only time I touch a desktop computer is at work. I have an iPad that does everything a laptop does for me but it can't play PC games.
  • The consoles I own are Xbox Series S and Nintendo Switch and an old 2DS that I hacked to play anything.

I feel in my soul that a game like the game I am craving exists but I can't find anything on my consoles that fits because I don't know what the gamer lingo is for this kind of game :host-cry:

The game I'm looking for doesn't have to fit every one of these criteria but this is the vibe

The type of game I'm looking for:

  • Has some sort of dungeon delving either literal or metaphorical where you go into the danger zone
  • You get lots of loot and prizes like slime gels or rare sword drops.
  • The dungeon itself may or may not have roguelite elements but the metagame is not a roguelike. You "return to town" and get better across runs
  • The stuff you find in the dungeon helps you get stronger between runs by having better gear or better stats.
  • I really want to see that shit that's like "you found a SPECIAL rare cape that gave +572 States to Attributes and has Effect!" Numbers and items and loot please
  • There might be some kind of home base you return to between runs that you can improve with your loot a la Dark Cloud
  • Unlike a full JRPG it's relatively plot minimal like if there is a plot it's mostly just seasoning and you can skip through it and not feel guilty for not finishing it.
  • The deeper the floors of the dungeon the better the loot. You can run the same dungeons over and over again maybe.
  • Combat could be either ARPG action shit a la Dark Cloud or top down turn based a la Mystery Dungeon or Rogue.

Special Late Addition: Aesthetically I don't want anything too Dark because I have a hard time visually processing things that are dark. Like Diablo and Darkest Dungeon just look like the TV has been turned off to me.

Like the fact that I've named some of these games shows that this vibe exists I just don't know the names of any for the Xbox or Switch and I don't know what terms would help me find it.

Okay gamers, come on, gimme your recommendations for games like this

You may be interested in Hades! It's on the Switch, and it's a wonderful roguelite centered around Zagreus, son of Hades, in his attempts to escape the Underworld to reach Mount Olympus, aided by the various Olympians!

you're looking for games tagged with "roguelike"/"roguelite," "loot-based," and "dungeon crawler!" try torchlight, it's like a lightweight diablo. i have heard good things about the etrian odyssey series, which have been remastered for switch/ds.

It sounds very much like you're looking for a roguelike game. I second the suggestion for Hades and advise you to look into The Binding of Isaac for the Switch as well. There's also Dead Cells, Hollow Knight, and Rogue Legacy 2 if any of these tickle your fancy.

these are more turn based jrpg-esque stuff but etrian odyssey and pokémon mystery dungeon are ds/3ds jrpg roguelike dungeon crawlers with loot and other stuff you’re looking for?

outside of that you’re maybe looking for an action roguelike like hades or dead cells? idk. they’re on switch if you wanna check that out. i also think diablo might be on game pass that has a lot of stuff you’re looking for i think?

Came here to rec exactly this! The 2DS ones are great, but I really like the Untold remakes of the first two. Nexus is also really solid, but those are all on the 3DS. You’re probably already aware of the Switch port of 1-3, which might be chill!

May not be exactly what you are looking for, but you might enjoy the Rune Factory games. There is some on the switch, but I would actually recommend getting 3 or 4 on your 2DS if you can. It is half farming sim, half monster hunting/dungeon crawling. It has a storyline, but they aren't super important to pay attention to. You can befriend townfolk and also get married like most farm sims, but it isn't a requirement. The dungeons are full of different monster that you can fight for drops, or you can attempt to tame them and keep them on your farm/have them fight for you. It also has a pretty involved crafting system for making it really strong weapons/armor if you are into that sort of thing.

I see your Dark Cloud references, so I suggest: Atelier Ryza, maybe? It's on my list for "games like Dark Cloud to play eventually," and while I haven't tried the game myself from what I've read it seems like it could fit your needs.

I have a particular fondness for Labyrinth of Refrain: Coven of Dusk by NIS, which is on the Switch and a handful of other things. The writing isn’t always my favorite, but there’s a lot of really interesting design around the navigation of the dungeon space, how you manage your roster of characters, and stuff like that.

The second tier of the dungeon is also a… is it Liliputian? You enter into a realm where all the inhabitants are like three inches high, and there’s a ton of very charming character design around that relative difference in scale.

There’s a demo on the Switch, also! There’s a sequel (Labyrinth of Galeria: The Moon Society) that I bought but haven’t played. I suspect you could jump in on either one and be just fine.

I played Torchlight 1 years ago, it's basically "Diablo clone with brighter colors." Very arcade pacing with loot, basically ignorable plot. Can't speak to the sequels, but the original one had the standard Diablo I structure where you go physically deeper into the dungeon, and every four levels is a setting change with like lava and stuff.

Wikipedia tells me the version of the original for the 360 is compatible with the Series S? And its sequels are available on the Switch.

Oh and a puppy. Torchlight gives you a pet.
