You know I was looking up some discussions on that and hit the interesting theory that katakana exist in part to help create visual separation in the language. Like, you use the kanji and katakana as anchor points, and hiragana as complements to those, and you've gotten like...70% of the utility of actual spaces lmao
Also I think if English didn't have spaces we would have ditched the silent e by now because otherwise breaking words at consonant clusters actually kinda works to make it readable already?
