I find it so funny that when I say "it's kinda my first time writing fanfic" people instantly assume it's my first time writing in general πŸ˜…

No I'm a jaded burnt out published author trying to take a break from capitalism

1 year ago today a huge collaboration project we did with author Xiran Jay Xhao was uploaded to youtube! It was the trilogy of videos that analyze how Southeast Asian culture was represented in Raya and the Last Dragon, which was a very not good movie! 🌝
My dear friend Serat and I originally reached out to Xiran when they announced they were going to do a video on Raya, and we were so grateful that they were cool with giving their platform to Southeast Asians to talk about this movie! The videos performed so well that we were able to give the revenue earned back to support Southeast Asian organizations. More bloggy details and feelings about that below!

Here's the organizations we donated to!

  • LBH APIK: An Indonesian organization that helps women and children who are victims of abuse
  • Sanggar Seroja: A theatre company made up on Indonesian trans women/ waria
  • Sanggar Swara: A support group for Indonesian trans women in the Jabodetabek area
  • Dapur Penyintas: Food drive for those affected by Covid, founded by Indonesia's first trans public official
  • SEED Foundation: Established by Malaysian social workers who aim to manage issues of marginalized communities (such as the homeless, people leaving with or affected by HIV and trans people)
  • Jejaka: A support group for mentoring queer Malaysian youth in a safe space
  • PELANGI campaign: a Malaysian campaign that works to ensure equality for queer people at home, at work and in every community.
  • The T Project: Singaporean social service for the transgender community.
  • Pink Dot SG: Annual event to celebrate the LGBT+ community in Singapore
  • ICS: Vietnamese LGBT+ organization

It's one thing to be given a platform to roast a mediocre Disney movie, but to be able to give back to communities in need meant so much to us πŸ₯°

We reached out to Xiran during a time where SEA voices surrounding this movie were being sidelined for white-centric discourse, so to have the chance to finally move that conversation forward to focusing on how Southeast Asians felt was invaluable. I got so many messages from people thanking us for sharing our perspectives that I still treasure! I hope these videos will help people be more critical the next time a big corporation touts representation the way Disney did for this movie.

Now that I've figured out formatting comics on cohost (thanks so much for all the tips everyone!!), I feel a lot more confident sharing a bunch comics we've made over the years on here πŸ˜ƒ

So #comics is now a new tag you can find on my little pinned tags tab πŸ€“ just a nice way to browse through comics by us!

Maybe as a treat I'll share an 11 page comic this Friday/weekend 😎
