first bandcamp friday in a while. here's some stuff i think you should check out.

"this year i lose my mind" by 2 mello

like all of 2 mello's work, this year i lose my mind is funky, loose, bouncy, and brilliantly produced. a delightful fusion of drum and bass, house, and hip-hop.

"aethiopes" by billy woods

billy woods once again proves himself to be among the most essential rappers making music right now, and a defining voice in abstract hip-hop. aethiopes is grimy, thoughtful, and beautiful.

"god's country" by chat pile

god's country is possibly the best loud rock album of the year. chat pile's brand of sludgy death-doom is barebones and straightforward, but executed immaculately, with incredible production and songwriting. god's country is metal for the age of fear and loathing in 21st century america.

"dismissed compilation vol 2" by dismiss yourself

dismiss yourself is a youtube channel-turned-netlabel that specializes in what i might call "weird internet music." this is a compilation of singles from the artists on their roster. most of it i would describe as "ridge racer type 4-core," but there's a lot of range within that, from drum and bass to house to techno.

"we were never a problem, you just think it's a competition" by evaboy

after killing off the character on last year's jook til i die, miya lowe returns to the evaboy mantle for ten minutes of bizarre, experimental ambient plunderphonics. i love it.

"acid disk 2" by eprom and g jones

eprom and g jones have, through this ep, quickly made themselves into some of my favorite dance music producers. they tear acid to shreds on this record, pulling squelchy 303 basslines and breakbeats inside out into dazzling compositions. highly recommended for any squarepusher fans out there.

"guppyloid world tour" by guppy

this album isn't out yet, but the singles so far are insane. this is the most bonkers vocaloid music i have ever heard. "gloop" sees hatsune miku rapping over a rubbery drill beat. 「カラコン」has her being pulled through a dazzling kaleidoscope of samples and synths. i have never heard anything like this.

"royal blue walls" by jane remover

i have previously talked at length about how jane remover is my favorite up and coming new artist of the past couple of years. royal blue walls is their first single since the release of their incredible breakout album frailty, and it lives up to expectations. jane takes the sounds of 90s lo-fi indie rock and shoegaze and crafts them with the attention to detail of an edm producer. the result is boundless pillow-soft layers of guitar, stretched and pulled like taffy through glitches and stutters to stunning effect.

"the forever story" by jid

jid shows incredible range and flexibility on this project, as always. his rhymes are dazzling and the production on every track is fantastic. comparing jid to kendrick lamar is tired and inaccurate, but if you're disappointed by how far kendrick has disappeared up his own ass, jid may prove a suitable replacement.

"2000" by joey bada$$

joey bada$$ returns with a sort of sequel to his first mixtape. it features his trademark organic jazzy production and thoughtful rhyming. 2000 is a great listen all the way through.

"ep" by luv exposure

luv exposure is a producer i recently discovered through this ep, and i was blown away. there are echoes of early 00s electronica here, plasticky drums and stuttering samples, but cut up and reshaped into something entirely new.

"the endless everyday" by luv exposure

luv exposure also has a full length out, which features some more laid back and ambient cuts compared to their ep. the fantastic, multilayered production makes it a compelling listen as well.

"level select" by pizza hotline

pizza hotline makes straightforward drum and bass, done well. the album is themed after the ps1, and the second track samples brian eno's windows 95 startup sound. what more do you people want??

"comfort noise" by umru

umru is the closest the hyperpop scene has to a successor to SOPHIE. comfort noise is his second album, featuring a wide range of collaborators and umru's trademark innovative, metallic sound design.

"comfort noise (music inspired by the motion picture)" by umru

this is the remix album of comfort noise. there's a lot of good stuff on here, but the jane remover remix of the cut "honest" is one of my favorite tracks of the year.

"weatherglow" by weatherday and asian glow

weatherglow is a collaborative project from the artists asian glow and weatherday, who are both prominent figures in a bandcamp-centric scene of young artists making music influenced by late 90s and early 00s lo-fi indie rock: the microphones, grandaddy, neutral milk hotel, duster, guided by voices. if you like any of these artists (especially grandaddy), you owe it to yourself to check out weatherglow. i think it's easily the best release to come out of this whole scene. fantastic songwriting and loud, bracing, raw production.
