maybe it's not actually that big a deal but:

because i saw a trader among the enemies, i googled later to see if i'd missed an option for dialogue (turns out i had, but approaching from the upper floor causes hostility on sight with no warning, whereas the lower floor allows dialogue, which is stupid.)

but anyway, while googling about that, i ran into a bunch of reddit threads saying it was an impossibly hard fight & they had to retry it repeatedly, and i beat it first try on Tactician without even preparing for a fight, so i'm feeling ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Yeah, I think the logic is that they interpret you approaching on the upper floor as trying to sneak up on them, but it doesn't feel great that the way to avoid combat there is to intentionally walk into an ambush. Demolishing boss fights on Tactician is fun though, I had a couple really funny ones in Act 3 where I cast like one leveled spell at most and still managed to win while remaining basically unscathed.

The first playthrough I killed him deliberately because I was "Good" (despite all the random murders), the second time I saw a displacer beast and went "oh fuck!" and killed it forgetting that it's his pet so. He was hostile lmao

Jackie and I wandered into the top floor fight and I think we would have had it if we'd prioritized the displacer beast a little higher, but we ended up reloading, went in from the bottom, and accidentally talked our way through it instead
