lot to be said about discord generally but i wanna talk about a very specific goofy edge case that i have just discovered and am exploiting to Good but Extremely Dumb ends

i have an issue with pluralkit. not a personal/ideological/whatever issue, a technical issue. because of how discord works, every proxied message will send two notifications in a channel you have notifs enabled for (the initial message is deleted and replaced with a webhook message). getting two rapid fire notifications is a sensory nightmare for me and, as a result, i have notifications disabled in basically every server i'm in that has pluralkit enabled. all fine so far.

this falls apart in a context where getting notifications is Actually Kinda Important (for example: a channel in your roommate server where Seeing Things As They Come In is useful). when you will be living exclusively with people who use pluralkit, it becomes a balance of accommodations.

anyway it turns out if you block someone on discord who you share a server with, they can still see your messages but you won't get notified for theirs (discord prioritizes conversation continuity, which is a reasonable approach here). but because of how bot messages are attributed, you still see/are notified for their pluralkit messages.

the obvious conclusion to this is "block your friends on discord". it gets the job done. i guess.

in reply to @jkap's post:

I've seen someone use this exact workaround before - it's so janky, but it does work.

The real solution should be for Discord to allow for far more granular alert settings, but that relies on Discord to actually do something useful, and...yeah.

Either that or they change how webhooks work, but that's REALLY asking for miracles.

oh this drives us bonkers, too. 90% of the time if we're on do not disturb, it's Exclusively to mute all the double ping sounds. you should be able to mute notifications from specific accounts, including any webhooks they make
