english is such a good and wonderful language that i've spoken it for about 28 years and i still get it wrong all the time. i still sometimes use "it's" where i should use "its" (yeah yeah, post the strong bad bit)
i still have no clue about where punctuation should go in quotes
in american english, you put the punctuation inside the quotes, like:
He eyed the tower, quivering. "Surely you don't mean," he swallowed, "we go in there?"
in britain they do it differently, putting the punctuation outside, like:
He eyed the tower, quivering. "Surely you don't mean", he swallowed, "we go in there"?
at least i think that's how they do it over there. i'm no expert on british english
i've always used them interchangably in some sort of grammar rule that i may be the only person following
see, if the thing in quotes ended with the punctuation, it would go in. like "surely you don't mean we go in there?"
but if someone is ending a sentence with a quote that didn't have it in there, i would put it out. like "he said it was like 'some sort of monster'."
Yeah I don't think that's how it works in either but also it's all constructs anyway. As long as you're able to convey what you want to convey you're fine. Language is descriptive not prescriptive
