a few months ago i was genuinely considering paying for a domain and hosting. today i'm thinking "damn i wish i had enough for bus fare to the city AND money for stuff while in the city"

when we moved here a friend told us about an all-you-can-play pinball bar in their area. i still haven't been! i wanna play pinball!!

haii, fellow broke dev here. i have a bit of experience with Computing For Free, so if you need hosting stuff:

  • use a subdomain service or something a SaaS provides (like username.github.io)! one of my favs is freedns.afraid.org, and they have a fuckton of domains, and even short ones like *.k.vu. they're free forever, and theyve been around forever (this is very much reflected in their web design) and will probably stay for a while
  • for hosting it largely depends on what you're hosting, but you can go a long way without spending a single dollar. a few examples:
  • plain html/static compiled websites: github or gitlab pages are imo the best option here. it just works
  • dynamic web apps requiring a server: vercel is pretty solid for this. their free tier is very generous. i use them for a bunch of projects i dont want to selfhost lol
  • if you got a spare PC somewhere and want to really self-host and want to share that over the internet, tailscale funnel is pretty nice!
  • for database & auth use supabase. theyre also very cool and have a nice free tier
  • as much as they suck, cloudflare is kinda nice for some things. heres a fun loophole: if you want to serve an almost unlimited amount of traffic (for example from a database or something that you want to proxy first), use cloudflare workers! they have a limitation of 100k runs per month, and each run only has a few ms cpu time, but they forgot to limit i/o. you can run >10gb on one run, so you basically have unlimited i/o lmao

if you want to host something else: there is a loophole for pretty much everything, lmk and ill look for one lol
