i think one of the more disappointing things about modern social media is seeing just how much energy is just wasted on internet fights and in-fighting and clique conflict, which could have been much more effectively placed helping organizations help people directly. so many orgs are suffering from decline in membership, volunteers and money, and all this energy is in high demand.

and it's all just wasted on bitching about who's messy and who's not.

This kind of energy was never gonna be spent on helping or doing anything worthwhile. Social media rewards time-wasting, anger, outrage, and bullshit because that's what makes the most engagement.

If anything, the really disappointing thing is that if you want to be a relevant org, you have to chase the very same engagement and manage to be interesting enough to distract people from their virtual catfights. That is what pisses me off the most; that those who do want to help have to spend this much time in the Internet equivalent of a bullfighting arena.

i mean, im using the same energy i channeled into petty internet bullshit and just redirected it into the orgs i try to help. all it requires is just a little bit of fine tuning. it ain't the exact same energy but it taps into the same raw material.

I wish I could figure out how to do that, because honestly the kind of energy I deploy to help is just not the same as the kind that gets me angry and petty. Maybe it's a personality thing, but if I could excise the pettiness out of me entirely I'd get more done.
