the phone i'd been using as a dev device is no longer working1. the tag input rewrite is blocked because i still can't verify if any of the changes i've made actually make a difference on android, which is the platform with All The Bugs there.

what should i buy to replace it. doesn't need to be a daily driver but needs to be good enough that i won't go insane using it for work.

  1. despite being not that old and a Good Phone from a Good Brand, it never received any software updates, which is unfortunately par for the course with every android phone i've ever owned2.

  2. qualifying as well that i was a full-time android user until 2014 and switched specifically because of shit like this. i am not talking shit as a Lifelong iOS User or w/e

i have purchased a pixel 6a for the following reasons

  1. within budget
  2. despite the assumed oxymoron of "google not dropping support," pixel devices do actually get software updates
  3. a-series pixels seem to be good baseline models
  4. was available for same day pickup at my local best buy

hopefully i will be unblocked on tag input once it's all up and running b/c i really want to be done with that

I have used a Google Pixel 5a as my cohost device of choice pretty much the whole time, and I'm happy to help test stuff if that'd be helpful.

Before this, I had a Motorola x4 for the past few years and that seemed to work fine throughout its life?

I also like to use https://www.productchart.com/ for sorting through potential phones by things like price, OS, storage, computing power, size, etc

I bought a Moto G7 Supra about 1.5-2 years ago, and it's served me pretty well as a personal phone (posting from it now, actually).

Dunno what the price on second hand ones is, or what your budget is, tho.
