don't trust anyone who wants to be The Next Twitter. no one with good intentions wants this.

prompted by seeing someone posting about yet another new social media platform marketing itself this way that has some goofy shit going on but, more importantly, very explicitly bans all adult content, which imo is a dumbass move.

in reply to @jkap's post:

Man, everyone knows the play is to implicitly allow adult content, right up you hit the Respectability Inflection Point (usually right around an IPO) at which point you kick out all the adult creators and torpedo the popularity of the platform.

Semi related: I am very happy that cohost not only allows adult content, but provides a very clear and easy to use system for flagging adult content. Having the 18+ flag appear on the top of a post even if the 'show adult content' flag is clicked in user settings is a huge boost to clarity vs sites like twitter where if I had that set I wouldn't see if an adult content flag was on a post at all; making the important distinction between adult only and general audience spaces trickier to be sure of.

I always read that style of marketing as "oh, us? We're making the next social media platform where we straight, white men can remain blissfully unaware of the rampant harassment going on under our noses, until some billionaire makes it incrementally worse for white people."
