minor drop this morning: the "Post" button in the top right uses the modal post composer now too; this is one of those things that i just Didn't Think About at first that seemed obvious as soon as i hit the button and got sent to a new page. (side note: just like with the share button, you can hold ctrl/cmd/middle click to open it in a new tab instead of the modal)

also asks should land this week. thank's

in reply to @jkap's post:

if i can impolitely pitch another one here -- editing posts? i recently shared a post and got the modal but then i forgot a tag so i hit edit to add it and it took me to another page and i was like "oh huh"

good call, there's a non-zero amount of Extra Work needed for that but i'll add it to the list (for comparison, updating the top-right button was effectively free)

I've actually today been intentionally using the edit drafts flow as a workaround for not wanting to use the lightbox. Click post, save empty post as draft, enter drafts, open empty draft, start composing…

I really, really dislike it. I already made a post about it in Cohost bugs/feedback but now I can't find it ( EDIT: It was this https://help.antisoftware.club/support/tickets/8195 click through for extra CSS breakage caused by this "feature" ). I do not like that the post box no longer looks like the space in which the post will actually be displayed and I really really hate that while I'm trying to post 2/3 of the screen is taken up by a "danger zone" that attempts to delete your posts. I do not think it is good Fitts Law to make the most emphasized verb while composing a post be "delete everything I just wrote". I don't even need that verb. If I wanted to cancel my post I'd just close the window. I also don't like that while trying to compose posts from mobile (where I can't use the right click/ new tab to bypass the lightbox) tapping to keyboard focus the compose area a substantial amount of the time just dismisses the compose box because it thinks I tapped in the Danger Zone.

I don't like the lightbox compose for reboosts but at least there it kind of makes sense because you might want to return to the page you were looking at before reboosting. For new posts it just makes no sense at all.

heard. we'll add a setting for it. but on a different note, the compose box shouldn't be disappearing on tapping outside the box if you've already got content in there; there should be a "are you sure you want to discard" dialog. if that's not appearing then that is for sure a bug.

I do get a "Really discard"? dialog if I click outside the box with content entered (unless the content is a content warning which for some reason doesn't seem to count). However, the fact the box dismisses unconditionally when content is absent is still a problem on mobile, because in order to enter content you must click on the compose area, which for me means tapping the left side of the screen, but cellphone taps are not precise and if I tap too far to the left of the screen I am in the "delete me" gutter and by definition this is the exact moment I have no content yet. So my first attempt to test the post screen on mobile it actually did just disappear on my first tap leaving me confused and blinking until I realized what had happened.

This said, even if I'm asked, most of the screen forwarding to an offer to delete content is still scary, having to dismiss the dialog is kinda annoying, and it's still annoying I can't access site chrome from a compose dialog (cannot right-click on logo to get a new non-compose screen, for example).

the new setting should be live within the next hour or so, look for "go to a new page when sharing or writing a post". i'll update this comment once it's live

EDIT: this is now live

there's a bug in the current post modal where the adult content box doesn't get auto-ticked if you're an adult page, and there's a discussion that's been open about this for months (but hasn't seen any comments for a while). i know this isn't really the place to point that kinda stuff out? but it feels important to note if the default is switching over to the modal. the new share button is pretty slick, though! thanks for making cohost!

The modal composer looks really slick! Thanks for the addition! :)

This is entirely personal preference, but on desktop I'd love if the field would default to the max width, like how it looks when you attach an image or fill it in with enough text.

Currently, starting a post on desktop feels really cramped.

Idk whaf max width is supposed to look like buf it scales with my browser font size, meowf. So at like 14px I can make it look like that

I am on Firefox/Linux (Ubuntu 22.04) myshelf
