Anonymous asked:
Is there a mobile app for cohost in the works?
not currently, and it's unlikely we will (as things currently are) ever ship a mobile app for a few reasons.
  1. we allow NSFW/18+ content, which we've seen has been a serious issue for other platforms that want to be in an app store.
  2. there's only two full-time software engineers at cohost. we don't have the resources to make a good mobile app AND a good web app, and we wouldn't be able to ship something we're happy with.

if one or both of these things change then we'll probably reconsider. but no app for now.

we're working on it! right now our frontend architecture is setup in a way where improving mobile has been needlessly difficult, but the larger rearchitecture project we're doing right now will improve that.

I checked this thread wondering if anyone had asked exactly this, and I'm glad to hear it's on the radar. I don't think an app is completely necessary (but then again I'm old and cranky, apps are a menace), but improving the mobile website experience would definitely go a long way toward long-term user retention for sure.

For #2 it's not even either a website or an app. It takes a lot more work building a mobile client than a web client and you'll have to build at least two of them, one for Android and one for iPhone who'll have to keep working on it even if there isn't that much development to be done, only to keep the app up to date in the ecosystem, with OS changes, new phone models coming in and older ones being deprecated.
